Call for papers

A pdf version of the Call for Papers can be downloaded here. EXTENDED DEADLINE for paper submission: 31 May 2012

NEM Initiative, the Networked and Electronic Media European Technology Platform, is organising the fifth edition of its main annual conference NEM Summit 2012 in Istanbul (Turkey) on 16-18 October 2012. Building on successful previous Summit editions, this NEM Summit will address various issues, such as research and business challenges, societal and user needs, implementation requirements, regulatory and standardisation environment, etc., related to the Implementation of the Future Media Internet towards New Horizons.

Programme of the NEM Summit 2012 will consist of a number of key notes and invited talks, an exhibitionfocused on presentation of research results in the NEM area achieved by various projects and organisations, three Scientific and Technical Summit Tracks, as well as an Application and Experimentation Summit Track. In order to collect relevant contributions from wide NEM community on Scientific and Technical as well as Application and Experimentation Summit Tracks, the NEM Summit 2012 Programme Committee is issuing the following Call for Papers.

The NEM Summit 2012 will have the following three Scientific and Technical Tracks:

  • New Digital Media Content – Generation, Transmission, and Consumption
  • New Networked Media Experience
  • New Connected Media Worlds

All stakeholders of networked and electronic media are invited to submit scientific and technical papers addressing topics defined within the NEM Summit Tracks, which are described below. The submissions should present original work, innovative ideas, and achieved results. Besides contributions to the three Summit Tracks, mentioned above, all further valuable scientific and technical contributions addressing relevant NEM research topics, as defined in the NEM Strategic Research Agenda (last version – 8.0 – available on the NEM Initiative website), will be considered by the Programme Committee as well.

Besides the Scientific and Technical Tracks, the NEM Summit 2012 will also provide the floor for talks on innovative applications or related business models, in particular considering specific issues related to SME’s, in the scope of its Application and Experimentation Track, where all stakeholders of networked and electronic media are invited to submit descriptions of new and innovative applications and experimentation in the NEM area. The submissions should also present original work, innovative ideas, and results, including description of on-going activities and development of related products, services, and applications for increasing the competitiveness.

Important Dates & submission guidelines

  • Opening of the submission tool: 15 March 2012
  • Paper submission deadline: 14 May 2012 – EXTENDED DEADLINE: 31 May 2012
  • Notification of acceptance: 16 July 2012
  • Deadline for final papers: 1 October 2012

Contributions to the NEM Summit 2012 Scientific and Technical Tracks have to be provided in PDF format, by using NEM Summit paper template and not exceeding six pages, through paper submission tool. The submitted papers will be subject to peer review by the NEM Summit 2012 Programme Committee and selected papers will be published in the Summit Proceedings, where all further rights will remain with the authors. Extended versions of papers of special merit might be considered for publication in an appropriate scientific journal. Templates for paper submission are available here in Word and PDF formats.

Contributions to the Application and Experimentation Track have to be provided in PDF format (not exceeding three pages – no template defined), where further related information (e.g. planned presentation means, web links, etc.) should be provided as attachment.

Papers shall be submitted online through the submission tool.

Description of Scientific and Technical Tracks

New Digital Media Content – Generation, Transmission, and Consumption
Media is now embracing 3D: digital cinema, consumer electronic equipment, game consoles, and mobilephones render content in plano- or auto-stereoscopic ways. Yet networked media lags behind. For example: the Document Object Model (DOM) behind web pages knows nothing about 3D and HTML-5 Video does notprovide means for stereoscopic rendering. This exciting Summit Track addresses the issues related to the generation, transmission, and consumption of 3D and any other new type of digital media expected to shapehow networked media content will look in the future. Typical topics for the Track, among others, are:

  • Generation, transmission, and rendering of CGI and sampled scenes
  • Merging CGI and video as seamlessly as possible
  • Inclusion of any innovative type of digital content, in particular 3D
  • Future software defined networking technologies for media delivery

New Networked Media Experience
The majority of today’s networked media content is consumed in a browser environment: Be it on mobilephones, tablets/pads, PC’s or smart TVs, media will more and more be displayed in a context of connectivity and the web. Within such a context, expectations and experiences with respect to the quality of reproductionbut also with respect to the usability of applications are new and significantly differ from former telephone or TV experiences. This track, therefore, deals with the Quality of Experience in Networked Media and includesuser studies as well as technological measures to analyse and or ensure the quality and, among others, includes the following topics:

  • Automatic quality control and supervision; adaptation, scalability, and accessibility
  • User experience and expectations in networked and electronic media
  • Applications over the device continuum: requirements and threats
  • Psychological and sociological dimensions of Quality of Experience

New Connected Media Worlds
Connected experiences have evolved from simple chats to full featured sharing of media experiences bysharing photos and films, video conferencing, collaborative work in various areas (not only ICT), enjoying community applications, etc., where web-based and mobile technologies turn communication among manyusers into an interactive and dynamic dialogue, with the users not only consuming but also creating and exchanging user-generated media content. Accordingly, this track deals with connected worlds forentertainment, communication, learning, gaming and collaborative business and, among others, focuses onthe following related topics:

  • Social media and networking, including content personalization and recommendation
  • New learning paradigms and collaborative work
  • Interactive experiences, serious games, connected TV
  • Cloud media

Description of Application and Experimentation Track

The Application and Experimentation Track covers innovative and business-oriented implementations, novelapplications and experimentations of networked media technology, which apply recent research advances into practical situations including validation, piloting and/or large scale trials. The submissions shoulddescribe a new generation of Future Media Internet applications and services, including relatedexperimentation, enabled by connected and mixed (real and virtual) media technologies in any of thefollowing example areas, where further interesting and related contributions will be considered as well:

  • Applications that include Advanced Media Analytics (such as Augmented Reality)
  • New applications for “second and third screen”, including device continuum
  • Various application areas, such as Education, Health, Wellbeing, Cultural Heritage, etc.
  • Big Data and Data-centric Applications for Connected Media Worlds
  • Innovative Business Models for Connected Media Worlds
