The NEM (Networked & Electronic Media) European Technology Platform has successfully organised its fourth international conference and exhibition, entitled « NEM Summit 2011» on 27-29 September in Turin (Italy). NEM reaffirmed its ambition to be the key independent stakeholder in the Networked Electronic Media towards Future Media Internet and a vital contributor in implementing the European Digital Agenda.

The NEM summit 2011 : the “not-to-be-missed” event for all those interested in the Future Internet

The NEM Summit, organised under the aegis of the European Commission and in close cooperation with key industrial and academic players worldwide, has become the “not-to-be-missed” annual occasion to meet key stakeholders, access up-to-date information, discover the latest trends, identify research and business opportunities, find new partners for upcoming FP7 calls, increase the visibility of projects and initiatives, and a key networking opportunity.

Beyond event sponsors, NEM Summit exhibitors also included R&D projects funded under the European Commission’s FP7 programme (or other related programmes) and addressing network and electronic media technologies and ICT at large. After the first three successful editions, the 2011 event has featured over 300 participants (see attendee list), 50 exhibitors, and 20 artists participating in the “NEM Art Contest”.

2011 NEM Summit Statistics

The NEM Summit was the event for those interested in the Future Internet and in the fast paced evolution of the networked and electronic media industry : Immersive and Pervasive Media, Cloud Media, Social Media, User Media. The conference attracted 28 papers covering the full range of NEM areas of interest. The quality of papers was higher than ever, and an award for best paper went to Technicolor for the paper entitled “Experimentation of Multipath HTTP Streaming over Internet“. A selection of papers from the Summit are published in Journal Computer Communications and NEM web site.

The initiative of mixing the creative Art and the NEM communities was pursued through the second edition of the NEM Sandpit and the NEM Art Contest. An award was delivered to the piece of art that makes the most innovative use of networks and media to Virva Emilia Auvinen for her work on “Isabella – The Secret Recipes” that blended real historic references into a beautifully illustrated game concept that makes history and learning come alive for children. The Summit was concluded by a NEM Art performance ‘Lighting Choreographer’ by Japanese artists from Kobe University.

NEM European Technology platform : where New Media Content and Networks meet

The September 27th twelfth General Assembly elected a new board and reassessed its ambition to be a key independent stakeholder in the networked electronic media sector; aiming at building sustainable European leadership in content production and networking technologies. Its objective is to promote an innovative European approach to the convergence of media and telecommunications towards a Future Media Internet that will enhance the lives of European citizens through a richer media experience. NEM has a 6-year track record of delivering a vision (“a new sector where contents and users meet networks”) that includes regular updates of the Strategic Research Agenda, position papers, and newsletters to the benefit of the Networked Electronic Media sector. NEM members adopted the NEM Position Paper on Future Research Directions and its contribution towards the preparation of the FP7 ICT Work Programme 2013 and the future Programme Horizon 2020 (NEM Position Paper on Future Research Directions – Opportunities for an Innovative Digital Europe) .

The NEM initiative is pleased to announce that a workshop on autostereoscopic technology will be organised by JUMA Communication in collocation with the NEM Summit 2011 on September 29, 2011 (11:00 – 12:30) at the Politecnico di Torino in Torino (Italy).

Max Judica Cordiglia, owner of JUMA Communication, recounts the experience that his communication agency gained in the field of glasses-free 3D technology, a new technology that has yet to reach the masses.

The technical challenges with a technology still “under development”, the lack of information around its availability in the consumer market, the new applications of the autostereoscopic glasses free 3D technologies in the fields of communication, medicine and neurology.

Some experiments conducted two years ago for treatment of medical images from CT in 3D without glasses were presented to 44°SIRM (Italian Society of Medical Radiology) and have had some success. The workshop will show the results and a series of interviews with some of the experts in this field.

How important are the eyes in the vision of 3D content? Dr. Maria Elisa Scarale of the Department of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Koelliker of Turin explores this topic from a medical perspective.

Autostereoscopic 3D images with their impressive complexity and richness of meaning can affect the viewer more than just 2D images, they can penetrate and impress us on a deeper level that other forms of communication, arousing emotions, evoking memories, stimulating the brain in ways yet to be studied.

Dr. Emilia Costa, the owner of the First Department of Child Psychiatry and Neuroscience of the Univerity of Rome La Sapienza leads us into this fascinating world.

The technology can also make you smile! During the conference, The Mammoth comedy duo, will delight the audience with some humorous sketches.

“Lighting Choreographer” has been developed by Minoru Fujimoto, Naotaka Fujita, Tsutomu Terada, Masahiko Tsukamoto (Kobe University, Japan). It is a new LED performance system to expand the expression capability of human body. It makes light effects on the user’s body synchronized with motion and sound, focusing on the viewing point that the produced effects recursively influence the choreographer.

Although there are many approaches to computer enhanced performances where audio and/or visuals are operated based on motion information of a performer, they are too simple to control the details at his/her will in the sense of expansion of body expression. Furthermore, they do not provide a way of body expressions to exceed the limit of the physical motions, such as moving their arms at a very high speed. Thus, Minoru Fujimoto came up with the idea to expand the body expressions by interactively changing the color and the size of body parts and combining kinematics and visual effects of lights by controlling LEDs with considering characteristics of the human body.

A performer represents various kinds of the feel of material, e.g. heaviness, lightness, sharpness, pop, violence, and soft, by dancing. By adding light illumination, performers obtains three factors for body representation; motion, sounds and lights. The projects aim is to redefine the relations between the body, sounds and lights, and to enhance human expressions.

Dancers: Makoto Hirata, Shuhei Tsuchida

The NEM initiative is pleased to announce that the “Search Computing and Social Media Workshop” will be jointly organised by the projects Petamedia (Network of Excellence on Peer-to-Peer Tagged Media), Chorus+ (Audio-Visual Search Coordinated Action) and Glocal (Event-Based Retrieval of Networked Media) in collocation with the NEM Summit 2011 on September 28, 2011 (11:30 – 16:30) at the Politecnico di Torino in Torino (Italy)

The workshop about “Search Computing and Social Media” presents cutting-edge search computing solutions that have been developed to provide users with access to networked media and in particular, social multimedia. It will showcase new techniques and applications have been developed in European research laboratories and focus on those solutions that are ripe for industry application.

The opening talk presents a vision on the area of search computing entitled “Search Computing: Business Areas, Research and Socio-Economic Challenges”. Then, a selection of leading researchers will present highlights and applications from a range of areas important for search and social media search.

The afternoon session will concentrate on the “Triple Synergy”, the combination of multimedia content, user-derived annotations and the structures of peer-to-peer and social networks. The Triple Synergy is deployed in order to improve user access (including search, recommendation, browsing and discovery) to multimedia online and in social communities. Here, the PetaMedia Network of Excellence will present multimedia applications that it has developed within the framework of its field trials.

The workshop will close with a panel that takes a critical look at the future of multimedia search, and in particular investigates the question of the contribution that search computing can make to innovation within the area of social media.

The NEM Initiative is pleased today to announce that MUSCADE project is joining the NEM Summit as a new Platinum Sponsor!

MUSCADE – MUltimedia SCAlable 3D for Europe, is an Integrated Project (IP), whose objective is to become the driving force in this global development, to provide key innovations, and to secure the IPRs for Europe. It is the logical successor of related projects in FP6 and FP7 Call1 that are developing important 3D technologies, but not claiming to develop the 3DTV system of the future.

MUSCADE aims to create major innovations in the fields of production equipment and tools, production, transmission and coding formats allowing technology independent adaptation to any 3D display and transmission of multiview signals while not exceeding double the data rate of monoscopic TV, and robust transmission schemes for 3DTV over all existing and future broadcast channels. The results of the project will be input to the respective standardization bodies including 3D@Home Consortium, SMPTE/TF on 3D@home, ITU-R SG6, ISO/MPEG and DVB/ES on 3D.
