Art meets Science at the 2010 NEM Summit: launch of an “Electronic art contest”

In its attempt to push the frontiers of technology and business, the 2010 NEM Summit (Barcelona, Spain, October 13-15) introduces a series of events created to facilitate communication and cross-fertilization among artists, scientists and entrepreneurs.
Art has always been a precursor of what is going to change our lives. Mixing art, science and technology will both open opportunities for artists to use NEM technologies to express their creativity and encourage researchers to push the limits of networked and media science to support artists’ creations. We hope that these events will result in artistic talent discovery and new businesses.
Thanks to the support of the two main sponsors of the 2010 NEM Summit, BBC and Technicolor, a “NEM art contest” is launched at the attention of artists from Europe and the rest of the world making innovative use of networked and electronic media technologies (based on texts, pictures, music, videos; referring to the most advanced – and whenever relevant – networked technologies: 3D, virtual reality, web, communications networks, etc.).
Pictures, videos, or short descriptions of candidate art works must be sent to NEMart@nem-summit.eu before September 1, 2010. A jury composed of NEM Summit sponsors, European Commission representatives and artists will select art work to be exhibited at the 2010 NEM Summit.
The artists whose artwork will have been selected will be informed on September 17, 2010. They will receive a free pass to the 2010 NEM Summit so that they can discover the latest Networked Electronic Media technologies through the conference and the exhibition, and show their artwork in a dedicated area.
The NEMart selection committee will grant the « 2010 NEMart award » (together with a 5,000 Euro price*) to the artwork that makes the most innovative use of NEM technologies (*the price may be split).
A “sandpit workshop” will also be organized during the NEM Summit. This will provide artists, entrepreneurs and scientists with an opportunity to lively interact with each other. It will be supported by experienced facilitators that work in the interplay of art and technology and will make this moment a fun and fruitful event. We hope it can inspire new collaborations and innovation across disciplines. The outputs of this workshop will be presented during the closing session.
